World Premiere of Pasturelands Cello Concerto Showcases November CSO Concert
Get ready for an extraordinary evening at the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra’s concert, Land That I Love, on November 15th at 7:30 PM at the Cheyenne Civic Center! Experience a breathtaking musical journey that celebrates the beauty of the American West. Presented by Drs. Robert Prentice and Sandra Surbrugg.
Our landmark concert will open with the inventive American composer Morton Gould’s American Symphonette No. 2, a lively orchestral piece that blends folk, jazz, and classical elements, reflecting the diverse musical heritage of America. Composed in the mid-20th century, it features vibrant rhythms and colorful orchestration, celebrating the spirit and culture of American life while evoking a sense of nostalgia.
Next the concert will feature our new Myra Monfort Artist-in-Residence, cellist Zuill Bailey—a real star in the classical music world and a Cheyenne favorite—as well our new Composer-in-Residence Jeff Lippencott. Jeff will conduct the world premiere of his cello concerto, Pasturelands, with Zuill and the orchestra. It’s a beautiful piece that perfectly describes the Wyoming landscapes! Zuill’s expertise and artistry promise to elevate this special concerto and pay homage to the rich landscapes that inspire us all.
The concert will conclude with the iconic Grand Canyon Suite, by Ferde Grofé. Composed in 1931, it is a concert suite that captures the beauty of the Grand Canyon through five movements. It begins with “Sunrise,” evoking dawn over the canyon, and continues with “Painted Desert,” depicting colorful terrain. “On the Trail” illustrates a lively mule ride complete with braying and the clip-clopping of hooves, while “Cloudburst” conveys a dramatic rainstorm. The suite concludes with “Finale,” celebrating the majesty of the landscape. Grofé’s orchestration immerses listeners a piece renowned for its vivid representation of one of America’s most cherished natural wonders.
CSO Musical Director and Conductor William Intriligator excitedly shares, “This concert continues our exploration of American composers and shows different sides of the American spirit and landscapes. Don’t miss it!”
Enhance your experience with an introduction to the concert by Maestro Intriligator and guest conductor, Jeff Lippencott and guest artist Zuill Bailey at our free “Lunch and Learn” on Fri, Nov. 14th, 12-1:00 PM at the Laramie County Public Library, or watch the video on demand on CSO’s website and YouTube channel. “Classic Conversations”, an abbreviated introduction to the concert by the Maestro, will take place on Nov. 15th, 6:30-7PM at the Civic Center for ticketed patrons. The concert will also be livestreamed for $25 per household for those who are unable to attend in person.
