Omar Overture: A Powerful Tapestry by Giddens & Abels

The overture from the opera Omar is an exciting and richly layered blend of musical traditions, incorporating bluegrass, hymns, spirituals, and influences from both African and Islamic music. From its opening measures, it sets the tone for this two-act opera, which explores enduring themes of resilience, faith, and cultural identity.

Omar, recipient of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Music, is based on the autobiographical essay: The Life of Omar Ibn Said, written in 1830 and published posthumously. Its author, a 37-year-old West African Islamic scholar, was captured, imprisoned, and transported to Charleston, where he was sold into slavery.

Composed by Rhiannon Giddens, with orchestration by Michael Abels, the overture incorporates the melody of “Koromanti,” one of the earliest documented songs composed by an enslaved person in the Americas, underscoring the opera’s historical and cultural resonance.

Giddens and Abels are both highly acclaimed American composers and musicians. Rhiannon Giddens, a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, accomplished banjo and fiddle player, and cultural historian, is a two-time Grammy Award winner and eight-time nominee. Among her many career highlights, she has performed at the White House for President and Mrs. Obama and received the inaugural Legacy of Americana Award from Nashville’s National Museum of African American Music in partnership with the Americana Music Association. She has also been featured in in-depth profiles by CBS Sunday Morning, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and NPR’s Fresh Air.

Michael Abels is a two-time Emmy-nominated composer known for his genre-defying orchestral and film scores. His hip-hop–influenced score for Us was shortlisted for an Academy Award and was named “Score of the Decade” by The Wrap.

Together, Giddens and Abels have created a work that bridges continents, centuries, and traditions, bringing Said’s extraordinary story to life through music of profound beauty and power.
