CSO Welcomes Back cellist, Zuill Bailey, the Myra Monfort Artist-in-Residence

Adding to the excitement of November’s concert, the CSO welcomes the return of Zuill Bailey, one of the world’s premier cellists and a favorite of Cheyenne audiences.  Zuill will perform the world premiere of Jeff Lippencott’s Pasturelands Cello Concerto, which will be guest conducted by the composer himself.

Pasturelands was written in an accessible Americana style to highlight the picturesque settings of western grasslands and pastures of the United States.  Composed in 4 movements, “Awakenings”, “Great Plains”, “Calves at Play”, and “Open Range”, this work expresses the daily and seasonal changes on the ranches and ranges of America.  From “Awakenings”, which opens the concerto as sunrise might open the day, to the fun and up-tempo third movement “Calves at Play”, Pasturelands urges the listener to enter into the simple yet ancient daily life of grazing cattle and fields full of swaying grasses.

A multiple Grammy Award winner, Zuill Bailey is an internationally renowned soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist with more than 30 albums to his credit. He has appeared with over 200 symphony orchestras worldwide. A graduate of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and The Juilliard School, Bailey currently serves as Professor of Cello and Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2014, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of Johns Hopkins University.

Zuill will also return later this season for Bailey Goes Baroque in the Barn, an evening of solo cello, baroque music in the pastoral setting of the historic Wyoming Hereford Ranch Sale Barn.
