CSO Presents This Land is Your Land: Featuring Gene Pokorny, tuba
The Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra (CSO) invites you to experience an extraordinary musical journey with its upcoming concert, This Land is Your Land, on March 14, 2026, at 7:30 PM at the Cheyenne Civic Center. Sponsored by Charles Schwab, Meridian Trust, and Townsquare Media.
This Land is Your Land promises to be a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of the American soundscape. The concert will kick off with the joyous ringing of bells in Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Celebration. The evening will continue with the lively jazz and pop influences showcased in Lalo Schifrin’s Tuba Concerto and the iconic Mission Impossible Theme, performed by the renowned tubist Gene Pokorny, principal tubist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. CSO Music Director and Conductor, William Intriligator, shares: “I am particularly excited for the Tuba Concerto and to collaborate with the incredible Gene Pokorny. Gene is a huge train buff, and he remembers Cheyenne fondly from a performance with the CSO many years ago. He can’t wait to come back to Cheyenne!”
The second half of the program features the Pulitzer Prize-winning Omar Overture by Michael Abels and Rhiannon Giddens, followed by Bernstein’s unforgettable Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. “Performing music from Bernstein’s West Side Story is always a special occasion for our orchestra,” said Maestro Intriligator. “The excitement and beauty of this music resonate with so many, especially with pieces like the Mambo, which is an absolute joy to perform!”
This Land is Your Land features a lineup that celebrates both beloved classics and fresh compositions, making it an event not to be missed. We hope you’ll join us for an unforgettable evening of music, camaraderie, and the spirit of American culture!
In addition to the wonderful music, the concert also features artwork created by 7th-12th grade LCSD#1 students for CSO’s annual Art in Music program. This year, students listened to Zwilich’s Celebration and brought the piece to life through their artwork. Their art is currently on display at the Cheyenne Civic Center and can be viewed during Civic Center box office hours (Tues.-Fri. 10am-4pm) through March 17th and at the concert. It will also be part of Cheyenne’s Artwalk on March 13th, 5-8pm. An awards presentation will take place before the concert on March 14th and the audience will have the opportunity to view a slideshow of the winning artwork as the piece is performed live onstage at the concert.
