Flutist Ysmael Reyes
Venezuelan flutist Ysmael Reyes enjoys a varied career as soloist, orchestral player, and teacher. He has been a prize winner in competitions such as the First Latin American Flute Competition in Venezuela, the Music Scholarship Award by the Dante Alighieri Society of Denver and the Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Competition at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Mr. Reyes has also been a semifinalist in the Frank Bowen Young Artist Competition and the Texas Flute Society Myrna Brown Flute Competition. More recently, he was an invited competitor in the Beijing Aurele Nicolet International Flute Competition in China and has been a scholar in the Powell Academy by Verne Q. Powell Flutes of Boston since 2008.
Mr. Reyes joined the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra as Principal Flute in 2006, and is currently on the faculty at Regis University and the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts. Ysmael has also performed with the Boulder Philharmonic, Fort Collins Symphony, Greeley Philharmonic, the Boulder Bach Festival, Colorado Music Festival and Music at Saddle Rock Performance Series.
Mr. Reyes has appeared as a concerto soloist with orchestras in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and the U.S. In 2000 he was invited as guest principal flute by the Juventudes Andinas Symphony Orchestra for their South American Tour, performing in Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. As a member of the Center for New Music in Iowa, he participated in chamber music recitals in United States and Russia and had a solo appearance in the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music (SEAMUS) National Conference in 2002. In 2009 he was invited as a performer for the festival CRUMB at 80, an event with George Crumb and music faculty from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Mr. Reyes started his musical career in the internationally recognized System of Youth Orchestras of Venezuela performing with several ensembles including the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra. He received his BM from the University of the Arts in Caracas, Venezuela with Luis Julio Toro and Victor Rojas and his MM from the University of Iowa with Robert Dick and Tadeu Coelho. Recently he received a DMA from the University of Colorado studying with Christina Jennings and Alexa Still.
