Four Seasons

Duke Ellington • The River
Copland • Appalachian Spring
Vivaldi • The Four Seasons
The Four Seasons might just be the most popular and beloved pieces of all classical music. Imagine hearing all four of these great concertos in one concert. Now imagine them played by a young dynamo with sensational stage presence and charisma. That’s Gareth Johnson. His intensity and pure joy in music-making will knock you over. Appalachian Spring is another audience favorite, portraying the spirit of America in a moving way. We all know Duke Ellington’s jazz, but you may be surprised and delighted to hear his orchestral music as the CSO performs a collection of wonderful and original music Ellington wrote for a ballet in 1970. All three works on this concert refer to Spring—or at least our longing for it in the middle of Winter!
